What happened

On September 25, 2009, at approximately 13:30 CST, a Piper PA-18-150 bearing registration HC-AHD crashed while approaching Pista Bardones in El Oro, Ecuador. The aircraft, operated by FumiPalma S.A., had departed from the same airstrip roughly 10 minutes earlier for a local pleasure flight.

Prior to the accident flight, the pilot had performed several touch-and-go landings and had taken a break. During the final flight, the pilot was accompanied by one passenger. While on approach for landing, the engine stopped producing power. The aircraft impacted the terrain approximately 1,970 feet short of the intended runway. The impact was followed by a post-crash fire that destroyed the airplane. There were 2 fatal injuries, as both the pilot and the passenger were killed.

At the time of the accident, weather conditions were visual meteorological conditions (VMC) with a visibility of 10 statute miles and winds from 140 degrees at 07 knots. No flight plan had been filed for the flight.
