Incident Details
A private pilot was landing on a 1,300-foot long dirt landing strip at his rural residence. During the approach, he estimated a quartering right headwind of 17 miles per hour with gusts to 23 miles per hour. As the airplane touched down, the pilot reported encountering an “extreme gust of wind.” The airplane drifted off the left side of the runway and entered freshly plowed ground.
Damage and Injuries
The nose gear impacted a furrow, causing the airplane to nose over onto its back. Substantial damage was sustained to both wings, the vertical fin and rudder, engine mounts, nose gear, and firewall. Both occupants exited the airplane unassisted and reported that they were not injured.
