Accident Overview
On May 22, 2010, at approximately 6:10 am local time (0040 UTC), Air India Express Flight 812 overran the runway during landing at Mangalore International Airport in Mangalore, India. The aircraft departed the runway into an adjacent valley and was substantially consumed by a post-crash fire.
Aircraft and Flight
The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-800, registered as VT-AXV. It was powered by two CFM56 engines. The flight originated from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and was on approach to Mangalore.
Occupants and Casualties
The aircraft carried 166 passengers and crew members. There were 158 fatalities and 8 survivors. The airplane was destroyed by fire following the accident.
Investigation
The investigation is being conducted by the Indian Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has designated a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the DGCA, as the United States is the State of design and manufacture of the aircraft.
