Incident Overview
A pilot undergoing training for a tail wheel endorsement and a flight review was practicing takeoffs and full stop landings with a flight instructor. The pair had completed ten such maneuvers with a right crosswind before switching runways to practice a left crosswind landing.
Landing and Loss of Control
The flare and landing were reported as normal. However, during the landing roll out, a gust of wind lifted the left wing of the aircraft. This caused the airplane to weathervane and veer off the left side of the runway.
Damage
The aircraft subsequently struck an airport sign, resulting in damage to the right horizontal stabilizer and the right elevator.
Instructor's Statement
The flight instructor stated, "I should have corrected the aircraft sooner and before my student got out of control."
