Accident Summary
A glider pilot reported being unable to maintain enough lift to land back at the intended airport. The pilot subsequently attempted to land in a field located approximately 1.9 miles short of the runway. During the landing, the glider encountered a 90-degree crosswind estimated at 15 to 18 knots. The pilot lost directional control, causing the glider to ground loop, and it collided with a mesquite tree.
Damage
The collision with the mesquite tree resulted in substantial damage to the tail boom and horizontal stabilizer. No other damage was reported.
Pilot Statement
The pilot reported that there were no mechanical deficiencies with the glider. The decision to land in the field was made because the pilot was unable to generate sufficient lift to return to the airport.
Crosswind Conditions
The landing was attempted with a direct crosswind of approximately 90 degrees relative to the intended landing direction. The wind speed was reported to be between 15 and 18 knots.
