Accident Details
During a landing on Runway 25, a tailwheel-equipped airplane experienced a loss of control after encountering a gust of wind. The pilot reported that the airplane had veered to the right during the rollout despite his attempts to maintain directional control. The airplane subsequently skidded, flipped over, and came to rest inverted. The accident resulted in substantial damage to the left wing, fuselage, vertical stabilizer, and rudder.
Pilot Report
According to the pilot, he was compensating for a crosswind final approach by positioning the airplane into a steady slip. He performed a wheel landing technique. As the airplane slowed during rollout, a gust of wind struck its right side, causing the aircraft to veer right. The pilot applied full left rudder and opposing aileron but could not stop the veer. He was about to add power to increase rudder authority via prop blast when the airplane skidded and flipped over. The pilot reported no mechanical anomalies with the airplane.
