What happened

On December 29, 2010, a China Eastern Airlines Airbus A320-214, registration B-2221, was performing the third scheduled flight of the day from Changchun to Dalian, China. During the initial takeoff roll at Changchun Airport, the aircraft reached a speed of approximately 10 knots when the crew heard a loud noise originating from the right side of the aircraft. Simultaneously, the aircraft veered to the right.

The Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitor (ECAM) displayed a warning indicating that the No. 2 (right) engine was losing RPM. In response to the engine failure, the crew aborted the takeoff, followed ECAM instructions to shut down the right engine, and returned the aircraft to the gate. There were no injuries resulting from the event.
