Accident Overview
On January 9, 2011, at 1930 universal coordinated time, an Air Tractor AT-802, Spanish registration EC-IOE, collided with trees near Santa Juana, Chile, while maneuvering at low altitude during a fire fighting mission. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The flight originated from a landing strip in the vicinity of Santa Juana at 1900.
Aircraft and Operator
The aircraft was registered to FAASA Group Aerodromo Sebastian Almagro Ctra and operated by FAASA Chile Servicios Aeros LTDA. The crew consisted of a certificated commercial pilot and an aerial observer. The pilot was killed, and the observer sustained serious injuries. The airplane was destroyed.
Investigation
The accident is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Chile. The Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics Chile is responsible for the investigation.
