A Boeing 737-500 returning to Vilnius following an engine failure was found to have metal debris in the engine's gearbox.

What happened

On January 14, 2011, an Estonia Air Boeing 737-500, operating as ES-ABL, experienced a loss of power from the right engine while cruising at FL 360. The aircraft was performing a scheduled flight from Vilnius, Lithuania, to Stockholm, Sweden. Following the engine failure, the crew returned the aircraft to Vilnius.

Upon landing, an inspection of the right engine, a CFMI CFM56-3C1, revealed the presence of metal chips on the accessory gearbox magnetic chip detector. There were no injuries resulting from this event.
