Pilot's Account
According to the pilot, he was practicing takeoffs and landings at his home airport. While executing a left turn over a hangar, an increase in crosswind caused the airplane to bank too steeply. This led to a stall of the left wing, and because the aircraft was at low altitude, the pilot was unable to recover before it struck the ground near a hangar. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe or engine that would have prevented normal operation.
Witness Account
A witness stated that shortly after takeoff, the accident airplane returned and "buzzed" the airport. The pilot then attempted to "buzz" his own restaurant, during which the airplane stalled and entered a spin at low altitude. The witness heard the engine noise increase to full power during the stall.
