Accident Overview
A solo airline transport pilot was performing a landing on a beach. During the landing roll, the airplane struck a rock, causing the aircraft to nose over and the right main landing gear to separate from the airframe. The right wing received substantial damage during the accident sequence.
Pilot Actions and Observations
Prior to landing, the pilot conducted a low pass over the intended landing area and assessed it as suitable for landing. However, upon touchdown, the pilot noted that the rocks on the beach appeared larger from the ground than they had from the air. The pilot stated that he inadvertently struck one of these rocks, leading to the accident.
Mechanical Status
The pilot reported no known mechanical problems with the airplane before the accident. The aircraft had been operating normally prior to the landing attempt.

In a written statement to the NTSB, the pilot indicated that he should have chosen a better location to land, acknowledging that the appearance of the landing area from the air was deceptive.
