Incident Details
A student pilot was conducting her first solo cross-country flight. The approach to the airport was uneventful, and she configured the airplane for landing on Runway 34, flying the final approach at an indicated airspeed of 70 knots.
Landing Sequence
During touchdown, the airplane initially contacted the runway on its main landing gear. The aircraft then bounced, prompting the pilot to decrease the pitch of the nose. This action caused the nose wheel to contact the runway independently of the main landing gear. The impact broke the nose wheel strut loose from its attachments and drove the strut into the engine compartment. As a result, the firewall sustained substantial damage.
Post-Landing Actions
Despite the damage, the pilot maintained directional control throughout the landing roll, keeping the airplane on the runway. After decelerating, she taxied the aircraft off the runway. She reported no mechanical anomalies with the aircraft prior to the accident.
