On July 8, 2011, at approximately 1311 UTC, a Hewa Bora Airways Boeing 727-100, registration 9Q-COP, crashed while performing a visual approach to runway 31 at Bangoka International Airport in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo. The aircraft was operating as a scheduled domestic commercial flight from Kinshasa.

At the time of the accident, the weather at the airport consisted of thunderstorms in the vicinity, heavy rain, and poor visibility. The impact with the ground resulted in the destruction of the aircraft and a post-crash fire. Of the 115 people on board, there were 77 fatalities, which included all three flight crewmembers and two of the four cabin crew members. All others were not injured.
