Incident Summary
A private pilot experienced an engine sputter while approaching the destination airport after a one-hour flight. The forced landing resulted in substantial damage to both wings.
Sequence of Events
Prior to departure, the pilot added 5 gallons of fuel to both the left and right fuel tanks. A visual estimation indicated a total fuel quantity of 23 gallons. Approximately four minutes from the destination airport, the engine began to sputter. The pilot observed that the right fuel tank gauge showed empty, while the left tank gauge indicated one-quarter full. In response, the pilot switched the fuel selector from the right tank to the left tank. Despite this action, the engine continued to sputter. The pilot then selected a field to perform a forced landing.
Aircraft Damage
During the forced landing, the airplane touched down between two trees, resulting in substantial damage to both the left and right wings. The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions or anomalies with the airplane.
