Incident Overview
A pilot conducting a positioning flight experienced a sudden change in weather conditions while cruising at approximately 400 feet above ground level. The helicopter was following a highway when the ceiling rapidly lowered, transitioning the flight from visual meteorological conditions (VMC) to instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).
Collision with Power Lines
At an airspeed of 65 knots, marker balls appeared directly ahead, indicating the presence of power lines. The pilot promptly lowered the collective and initiated a right diving turn in an attempt to avoid the wires. However, one of the main rotor blades made contact with a power line during the maneuver.
Post-Contact Response
Following the impact, the rotor system continued to operate within normal limits, but the helicopter began to vibrate. In response, the pilot decided to perform a precautionary landing in a nearby field.
Damage Assessment
A post-accident examination of the helicopter revealed that the main rotor blade which had struck the power line was substantially damaged. No other damage or injuries were reported in the source.
