What happened
On May 9, 2012, at 14:50 local time, a Sukhoi SJ100-95, registered as RP97004, crashed into terrain approximately 35 miles south of Jakarta, Indonesia. The aircraft was performing a demonstration flight at the time of the accident. The impact resulted in 44 fatalities, including 40 passengers and 4 crew members. The aircraft was destroyed in the crash.
The investigation
The National Transportation Safety Committee of Indonesia (NTSC/KNKT) led the investigation. Because the aircraft was equipped with an ACSS/L3 Terrain Warning and Traffic Collision Avoidance System (T2CAS), and the United States is the state of design and manufacture for that system, the NTSB provided a U.S. accredited representative to assist the Indonesian authorities.
