An Alitalia Airlines Airbus A319 experienced a nose landing gear failure while taxiing to a stand at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport.

What happened

On August 3, 2012, at approximately 09:00 local time, an Airbus A3EN with registration EI-IMS, operated by Alitalia Airlines, arrived at Rome, Italy (LIRF) from Venezia, Italy (LIPZ).

While the flight crew was performing a left turn toward the parking stand during taxi-in, the aircraft experienced abnormal skidding from the nose landing gear. A subsequent inspection revealed that the left nose wheel assembly had completely detached from the aircraft, resulting in damage to the nose landing gear axle area. The detached nose wheel assembly and associated debris were located on runway 16R, which was the runway used for the landing.

The aircraft was carrying 95 passengers and 5 crew members. There were no injuries reported following the incident.
