Incident Overview
A pilot conducting a cross-country flight experienced two engine sputters and performed a precautionary landing in a field approximately 20 miles from the intended destination. The landing was uneventful.
Precautionary Landing and Refueling
After landing, the pilot secured ground transportation and obtained additional fuel for the airplane. The field was described as "L-shaped."
Subsequent Takeoff
During the subsequent takeoff from the field, the airplane drifted to the right and struck a culvert located on the right boundary of the field. The pilot continued the takeoff and flew to the intended destination, where the airplane landed.
Post-Flight Inspection
An examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed damage to the nosegear, lower fuselage, and firewall. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions with the airplane.
