Accident Sequence
A student pilot and instructor were conducting a training flight focused on practicing takeoffs and landings. During a soft field takeoff, the student applied aft control pressure and added power to initiate the takeoff. After becoming airborne, the airplane drifted to the right. The student corrected the drift, but the airplane then drifted to the left.
Instructor Intervention
The instructor subsequently took control of the airplane. He lowered the nose to gain airspeed, during which the left landing gear contacted the runway surface and collapsed. The instructor then overcorrected to the right, causing the right wing to contact the ground.
Outcome and Damage
The airplane settled to the ground off the right side of the runway and spun to the left before coming to rest. The accident resulted in substantial damage to the aft fuselage of the aircraft.
