What happened
On June 2, 2014, at approximately 0851 UTC, an Aeroprakt 22L2, registration RA-0080A, crashed into flat terrain near Khabarovsk, Russia. The aircraft had departed from the Kalinka Landing Site in Volochaevka, Birobidzhan, Russia.
At the time of the accident, weather conditions were within visual meteorological conditions (VMC). The impact with the terrain resulted in 2 fatalities for the pilot and passenger. The aircraft was destroyed by the forces of the impact.
The investigation
According to Russian authorities, the aircraft likely experienced a loss of engine power prior to impacting the terrain. Post-accident photographs showed that the cockpit area was destroyed upon impact, and the leading edge of the left wing exhibited uniform crushing toward the rear.
