What happened

On July 23, 2014, an ATR 72-212A, registration B-22810, was performing a flight from Kaohsiung to Magong operated by Transasia. Due to reported visibility being below VOR minima at the airfield, the crew was instructed to enter a holding pattern. As visibility was later reported to be 1600m, the aircraft was vectored toward the runway.

The crew initiated a descent and began the VOR DME approach to runway 20. During the final approach, the area around the airfield was experiencing heavy showers. The aircraft struck trees located approximately 850m northeast of the runway axis and subsequently impacted a block of houses roughly 730m east of the threshold for runway 20. The accident resulted in 58 fatalities.
