Approach and Landing
The pilot, prior to departure, consulted the Airport/Facility Directory and noted a displaced threshold on a runway at the destination airport. After departing, the pilot entered the traffic pattern to land on runway 28, a 2,275-foot turf strip. The pilot was concerned about the relatively short runway length and, on final approach, increased the airplane's descent angle to maximize the available landing distance.
Collision with Power Lines
While on short final approach, the pilot suddenly observed power lines that ran perpendicular to the runway across the threshold. Immediately after sighting the lines, one of the main landing gear wheels struck the wire. The impact caused the airplane to yaw to the left and pitch nose-down.
Outcome
The pilot attempted to correct the upset, but the airplane struck the ground, resulting in substantial damage to the airframe. The power lines were depicted in the airport information available to the pilot.
