What happened

On April 12, 2015, at approximately 1915 UTC, two aircraft impacted mountainous terrain near the Serrania Los Cobardes Mountain in the vicinity of San Vicente de Chucurí, Santander, Colombia. The aircraft involved were a Cessna 172S, registration HK5064G, and a Cessna 150M, registration HK1912G.

The flights departed from Barrancabermeja/Yariguies Airport (SKEJ) at approximately 1900 UTC, destined for Palonegro International Airport (SKBG). The flights were being conducted by Aeroclub Flight School under Colombian flight regulations and were scheduled to perform a formation training flight.

Approximately 15 minutes after departure, neither aircraft responded to radio calls from the air traffic control tower. About 45 minutes after departure, both aircraft were located in mountainous terrain at an altitude of approximately 7,600 feet above mean sea level, positioned roughly 300 yards from each other. The impact resulted in 3 fatal injuries, involving the flight instructor and student pilot in HK5064G and the student pilot in HK1912G.
