A Bell 407 helicopter experienced an unexpected high rate of descent while approaching a helipad with an external load.

What happened

On May 2, 2015, a Bell 407 helicopter, registration P2-HSL, was performing an approach to a helipad in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. The aircraft, powered by a Roll-Royce M250-C47B turboshaft engine, was transporting an external load consisting of two diesel fuel drums.

During the approach, the aircraft experienced an unexpected, uncommanded high rate of descent. In response to the event, the pilot jettisoned the external load. Following the release of the drums, the pilot was able to complete a safe landing.

There were no injuries resulting from this incident.
