Discovery of Damage
During a scheduled 50-hour maintenance inspection, an airframe and power plant mechanic discovered that the airplane's firewall was substantially damaged. The damage was noted during routine examination, prompting further investigation by the operator.
Investigation and Pilot Reports
The operator was unable to determine when the accident flight that caused the damage occurred or which pilot was responsible. Numerous pilots had flown the airplane during the period since the last maintenance inspection, which took place approximately three months prior to the discovery. None of these pilots reported any event that would have resulted in damage to the airplane.
Previous Maintenance
The airplane's last maintenance inspection occurred about three months before the current inspection. No previous discrepancies related to the firewall were noted during that inspection or in any subsequent reports.
