On July 23, 2015, at approximately 12:23 UTC, a Korean Air Airbus A330-223, operating under registration HL8211, experienced a stall of the number 1 (left) engine during the initial takeoff phase from King Khalid International Airport (KSA) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Following the engine stall, the flight crew observed an exhaust gas temperature overlimit and an engine failure warning for the number 1 engine in the cockpit. The crew declared an emergency and proceeded to perform an in-flight shutdown of the affected engine. The aircraft subsequently returned to King Khalid International Airport and completed a single-engine landing without further incident. There were no injuries resulting from the event.
