Incident Description
The pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that during the landing roll, the airplane abruptly initiated a right turn. Despite the pilot's application of left rudder and left brake inputs, the deviation could not be corrected. The left wing and nose dropped, and the airplane came to rest on the right side of the runway.
Damage
After the pilot exited the airplane, it was observed that the left landing gear had been torn from the airframe. The gear remained attached only by the brake line and was dragged for approximately 100 feet. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the forward fuselage, left wing, and left aileron.
Post-Accident Inspection
A post-accident inspection determined that the outer gear leg bulkhead had failed. This failure allowed the gear leg to drop out of the bulkhead and rotate to the rear during the landing roll.
