What happened
On July 12, 2016, a Boeing 737-300, registration XA-UNY, was performing a landing at Mexico City Airport following a flight from Cancun Airport. During the landing roll on Runway 05L, the aircraft experienced a severe vibration involving the left main landing gear. At the time of the incident, weather conditions were visual meteorological conditions, and the crew had completed a visual approach.
There were no injuries reported among the 145 passengers and 5 crew members on board.
The investigation
The investigation is being conducted by the DIRECCIÓN GENERAL DE AERONAUTICA CIVIL (DGCA) of Mexico. The NTSB has appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the DGCA under ICAO Annex 13. The vibration during the landing roll resulted in several mechanical failures, including the fracture of the shimmy damper and damage to both the upper and lower torsion links and torsion link pins.
