What happened
On November 22, 2016, a Curtiss Wright Travel Air 4000, registration N3242, was taxiing toward a departure runway in San Diego, California. While taxiing, the pilot of the aircraft performed S-turns to maintain visibility over the nose of the tailwheel-equipped airplane. During this maneuver, the pilot failed to observe an aircraft ahead that had been instructed to hold short of an upcoming taxiway.
The N3242 impacted the empennage of the stopped aircraft. The collision resulted in no injuries to either pilot. The right wing of the Travel Air 4000 sustained substantial damage, and the empennage of the stationary aircraft also sustained substantial damage.
