What happened
On October 4, 2016, an Embraer E170 operating at Warsaw Chopin Airport (EPWA) was involved in a bird strike incident. The flight crew was notified of the strike by a maintenance mechanic, who discovered physical evidence of an impact on engine number 1. Following the discovery, a special inspection of the engine was conducted. This inspection revealed no structural damage to the engine, though traces of the bird strike remained visible. The biological debris was subsequently removed from the engine.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the physical evidence found on the aircraft's engine and the environmental conditions at the time of the occurrence. The investigation established that the weather conditions on the day of the incident did not contribute to the event. The findings were centered on the presence of wildlife in the flight path.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was the presence of a bird in the aircraft's flight path.
- Atmospheric conditions were not a contributing factor to the strike.
