Incident Overview
During a flight in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), the pilot chose to conduct an area navigation approach. While descending to the minimum descent altitude (MDA) of 800 feet, the pilot reduced airspeed and shifted focus outside the cockpit to locate the runway. Visibility was reported as ¾ mile. Approximately 20 seconds later, the aircraft contacted treetops.
Response and Damage
Immediately after the tree strike, the pilot initiated the missed approach procedure and subsequently diverted to an alternate airport. The right wing sustained substantial damage. The pilot noted that no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures were present that would have prevented normal operation.
