Accident Details
The pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported a loss of directional control during the landing roll in crosswind conditions. According to the pilot, as he transitioned from using rudder to applying wheel brakes, the tail began to swing rapidly to the left due to the wind. Rudder correction proved ineffective, and despite the application of wheel brakes, the airplane continued into a clockwise ground loop. Subsequently, the left main landing gear collapsed, and the left wing struck the runway surface.
Damage
The left wing sustained substantial damage. The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Weather Conditions
An automated weather observation station at the accident airport reported wind from 040° at 8 knots around the time of the accident. The pilot noted that while on short final, the air traffic tower controller announced wind from 050° at 12 knots. The landing was conducted on runway 36.
