Accident Details
On September 3, 2017, at approximately 0930 coordinated universal time, a Cessna 172M aircraft with South African registration ZS-JDN was destroyed when it impacted a valley in the Magaliesberg Mountain range near Hekpoort, South Africa. The aircraft was on a local personal flight that had departed from Wonderboom Airport (FAWB) in Pretoria, South Africa. Both occupants, who were commercial pilots, sustained fatal injuries.
Investigation
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) is conducting the investigation. As the State of Manufacture and Design of the airplane and engine, the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has appointed a US Accredited Representative under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13 to assist the AIID in its investigation.
