Accident Overview
On October 6, 2017, at approximately 1530 coordinated universal time, a Zlin Z-50L aircraft, registered ZS-VAR, was destroyed when it impacted terrain shortly after departing from Kitty Hawk Airport (FAKT) in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The pilot, the sole occupant, sustained fatal injuries. The flight was conducted under visual meteorological conditions as a local personal flight.
Investigation
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has taken charge of the investigation. In accordance with ICAO Annex 13, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), representing the State of Manufacture and Design of the engine, has appointed a US Accredited Representative to assist the AIID in its inquiry.
