Incident Overview
On April 17, 2018, Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, a Boeing 737-7H4, was operating a flight from LaGuardia Airport in New York to Dallas Love Field in Texas. While over Pennsylvania, the aircraft experienced an engine failure. The engine cowl broke apart during the failure, and cowl fragments struck the fuselage. One fragment burst a cabin window, causing explosive depressurization of the aircraft. Other fragments caused destruction to the wing.
Emergency Response
The pilots responded by descending the aircraft and diverting to Philadelphia International Airport in Pennsylvania, where the aircraft landed without further reported incident.
Casualties and Damage
One passenger was partially ejected from the aircraft and died. Eight other passengers sustained minor injuries. After the accident, the aircraft was written off.
