Incident Narrative
The pilot reported that during the approach, the airplane encountered a sudden downdraft. The tailwheel subsequently struck the top of a 5-foot fence. Following the impact, the airplane nosed over.
Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing and empennage.
Pilot Account
The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
Weather Conditions
An automated weather observation system located approximately 20 nautical miles from the accident site reported that around the time of the incident, the wind was from 190° at 3 knots. The pilot reported that the sky was clear, visibility was unlimited, the temperature was 45°F, and the wind was from 270° at 8 to 10 knots. The pilot landed to the west.
