Incident Overview
The pilot reported that the initial approach to the destination airport was initiated at an altitude of approximately 1,800 to 2,000 feet mean sea level. During this phase, the airplane encountered a "widespread circling group of what appeared to be turkey vultures." The right wing of the aircraft struck a bird, resulting in substantial damage to the wing structure.
Landing and Damage
After the bird strike, the pilot continued the approach and landed the airplane without further incident. Post-landing inspection revealed substantial damage to the right wing. The airplane sustained no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation, according to the pilot's report.
