What happened
On July 7, 2018, a student pilot was conducting flight training at Zamość (EPZA) aerodrome. The flight was part of a type-conversion training program, specifically focusing on winch launch procedures. This was the pilot's third flight of the day and their first flight in the SZD-51-1 Junior.
During the final phase of the landing approach, the pilot applied aerodynamic brakes while maintaining the flare. The glider touched down with excessive speed, causing the aircraft to bounce off the ground. Upon the second touchdown, the pilot lost directional control, veering significantly to the left of the landing axis. This excursion took the glider off the designated runway surface, through runway markings, and resulted in the left wingtip striking a parked winch car.
The investigation
The investigation, conducted by the operator's commission, examined the flight sequence, the pilot's training status, and the environmental conditions at the aerodrome. The inquiry focused on the pilot's technique during the flare and touchdown, the instructor's oversight during the maneuver, and the placement of obstacles near the runway.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was improper landing technique, which led to the loss of directional control during the landing roll.
- The supervising instructor failed to react to the developing landing error or provide corrective radio instructions.
- The presence of the winch car in close proximity to the runway contributed to the severity of the impact.
- A lack of training consistency, characterized by long breaks between flight sessions, was identified as a contributing factor.
