What happened
On February 5, 2019, at approximately 13:15 LMT, an instructor and a student pilot were operating a Cabri G2 helicopter for a scheduled cross-country training flight. While performing taxiing maneuvers to move from the parking area to the takeoff position at Dęblin (EPED) aerodrome, the crew experienced a sudden and violent loss of directional stability. This instability was accompanied by a simultaneous loss of altitude. The crew managed to execute a safe landing on the taxiway.
The investigation
The investigation, conducted by the operator, focused on the mechanical performance of the aircraft during the taxiing phase. Following the event, the helicopter was removed from service and underwent a thorough technical inspection to identify the source of the engine instability.
Findings
- The investigation established that the primary cause of the incident was worn spark plugs.
