What happened

On May 10, 2019, at approximately 1105 UTC, a Piper PA-38-112 Tomahawk, registration ZU-FUO, crashed into a ridge north of the Mountain View Lodge Airport near Mookgopong, South Africa.

The flight originated from Volksrust airfield in the Mpumalanga Province. While approaching the destination airfield from the west, the pilot intended to overfly the landing strip to check for the presence of animals on the runway. During the maneuver, the pilot executed a left turn to join the circuit, at which point the aircraft struck the ridge. The impact was followed by a post-impact fire that destroyed the airplane.

The accident resulted in 2 fatal injuries for the pilot and passenger.
