Incident Overview
A student pilot serving as the sole occupant of an experimental light-sport, weight shift-control aircraft reported experiencing an "unexpected high degree" of aircraft banking and controllability issues during the initial climb phase of flight. In response, the pilot decided to abort the takeoff and return to land.
Landing Event
During the landing roll, the aircraft bounced. The subsequent touchdown occurred on the nose landing gear, causing the aircraft to roll onto its left wing before sliding to a stop. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the left wing and the airframe.
Meteorological Conditions
The METAR from the nearest airport, located 4 nautical miles to the west of the accident site, reported that around the time of the incident the wind was from 340° at 4 knots. The student pilot was using runway 36 at the time of the landing.
Mechanical Status
The student pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the aircraft that would have precluded normal operation. No further causal factors were identified in the report.
