What happened
On August 28, 2019, during a pre-flight inspection at the LPR Flight Training Center base in Warsaw-Bemowo, the pilot of a Tecnam P2008JC identified an issue with the elevator control. While attempting to check the freedom of movement of the elevator, the pilot observed that the control surface would lock in certain positions. Additionally, audible friction sounds were heard emanating from within the fuselage during movement.
As a result of this discovery, the aircraft was immediately grounded and removed from flight operations.
The investigation
Because the aircraft was still under warranty, the manufacturer was notified of the incident. A manufacturer's mechanic arrived at the site to perform a detailed inspection of the flight control system. The inspection revealed a loss of lubricating substance on the bearings and other components associated with the elevator mechanism.
Following the discovery, the mechanic applied lubrication to the bearings and all relevant elevator control elements. Subsequent functional tests confirmed that the elevator was operating correctly, and the aircraft was subsequently returned to service.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was the depletion of lubricant on the bearings and elevator control components.
