Incident Overview
The pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that, upon completion of the landing roll on a grass area adjacent to an asphalt runway, the main landing gear dug into an area of soft grass and the airplane nosed over. The landing had been made on the grass surface, and the aircraft was decelerating during the landing roll when the main gear encountered the soft ground.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage, vertical stabilizer, and rudder. These components were damaged as a result of the nose-over event.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The pilot did not identify any other issues with the aircraft prior to the incident.
