What happened
On March 23, 2024, a student pilot was conducting their first solo flight as part of a PPL license training program. The flight was operating a TECNAM P200 and 08-JC, registration SP-LFE, on a route from EPPT to EPKT and back to EPPT. During the return leg toward EPPT, the student pilot reported a sudden onset of physical illness and a significant deterioration in their well-being. This medical condition resulted in the pilot experiencing difficulties maintaining spatial orientation and navigating the aircraft.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the pilot's sudden loss of situational awareness and the subsequent emergency procedures. The PKBWL examined the communication between the student pilot, the supervising instructor, and air traffic controllers. It was established that continuous radio contact was maintained throughout the event, allowing the instructor and flight controllers to provide the necessary guidance to assist the student in returning to the airfield.
Findings
- The primary cause of the serious incident was the sudden deterioration of the student pilot's health.
- The medical emergency directly led to the pilot's inability to maintain proper orientation and navigation during the flight.
