What happened
On August 31, 2024, at approximately 06:00 local time, a Cameron A-315 hot air balloon, registration SP-BIL, departed from Jeńki near Białystok for a recreational flight. The aircraft was carrying 15 passengers and a crew of one. The flight initially proceeded under stable conditions with surface winds of 2-5 knots from 110 degrees.
After approximately 45 minutes of flight, weather conditions began to deteriorate. The pilot observed an increase in wind speed and a shift in wind direction during descent. In response to the changing conditions, the pilot decided to terminate the flight and perform an immediate landing in Rogówek. Prior to touchdown, the pilot informed the passengers of the necessity for an immediate landing and warned of the potential for a hard landing, while also reiterating safety instructions.
As the balloon made contact with the ground, the basket overturned and was dragged by the balloon. During the impact, two passengers were ejected from the basket and trapped underneath it, sustaining serious injuries. One other passenger sustained minor injuries. The aircraft itself, consisting of the envelope, basket, and burners, sustained no damage.
