Accident Details

On May 3, 2024, at approximately 1830 Pacific daylight time, an Ultramagic SA Z-90 balloon registered as N290UM was involved in an accident near Del Mar, California. The balloon was being operated as a personal flight under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The pilot reported no injuries to themselves, but the passenger was fatally injured.

Pilot's Account

According to a written statement by the pilot, the balloon launched at 1815 with the sole passenger for a planned sunset “celebration of life” flight. At an altitude of about 1,300 feet above mean sea level, the passenger requested privacy for ceremonial reasons, prompting the pilot to turn his back. Approximately 20 to 30 seconds later, the pilot perceived a shift in the basket and realized the passenger had jumped from the balloon. The pilot observed the passenger free falling but did not witness the impact with the ground.

Aftermath

After the passenger jumped, the pilot radioed his ground crew, requesting that they call 911. About 30 minutes later, the pilot landed the balloon and was met by police officers. He provided a statement and later that evening returned with the officers to the balloon.
