Incident Overview
On October 27, 2024, at 1130 eastern standard time, a Piper PA-28-140, registration N926MK, was substantially damaged when it veered off the runway and struck a guardrail near Fairmont, West Virginia. The aircraft was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight. The student pilot, who was the sole occupant, reported no injuries.
Pilot Report
According to the pilot, the flight departed with light winds and included a series of maneuvers followed by a successful landing. On the subsequent takeoff and landing cycle, the pilot attempted to land but initiated a go-around after finding the airplane high on final approach. During the second landing attempt, the pilot noted that winds had increased. As the airplane touched down, it bounced and was "pushed" to the left. Despite corrective control inputs, the aircraft exited the runway, collided with a guardrail, and a post-impact fire ensued.
Aircraft Examination
An FAA inspector examined the wreckage and confirmed substantial damage to the left wing. The pilot stated that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have prevented normal operation.
