What happened
On March 9, 2025, at approximately 21:04 Pacific daylight time, a Robinson R44 II, registration N44KY, was involved in an accident in North Las Vegas, Nevada. The aircraft was being operated by West Air Helicopters as a Part 91 air tour flight, performing tours of the Las Vegas Strip from North Las Vegas Airport (VGT).
After completing weight and performance calculations, the pilot prepared for the seventh tour of the shift. As the helicopter transitioned into forward flight and reached a speed of approximately 25 knots, the pilot's door opened abruptly. The pilot reported a strong blast of wind entered the cockpit, blowing away his hat, headset, and headlamp.
In an attempt to close the door, the pilot released the collective control with his left hand and reached across his body. This action caused the pilot to apply right cyclic input, which led to the helicopter sinking. The right skid struck the ground, triggering a dynamic rollover. During the event, the main rotor blades struck the ground, and the aircraft spun before coming to rest on its right side.
The pilot was not injured, though the two passengers sustained 2 minor injuries.
