What happened
On May 11, 2025, at approximately 12:31 CDT, a Piper PA 46-3ASSP bearing registration N253MA was involved in an accident near Greenwood, Indiana. The aircraft, operated by HOOSIER DOC LLC, was performing a personal flight under 14 CFR Part 91.
The pilot reported that the aircraft had undergone a conversion from a piston engine to a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-35 turboprop engine. During the initial taxi, the pilot noted that advancing the throttle did not increase power, though the engine responded normally after a subsequent attempt. Following normal pre-takeoff engine and propeller checks, the aircraft departed from runway 1 at Indy South Greenwood Airport (HFY).
As the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 100 feet above ground level, the engine suffered a total loss of power. Despite the pilot advancing the throttle, no power was regained. The aircraft subsequently impacted a taxiway on the west side of the runway and slid into an embankment. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage. The pilot and passenger sustained 2 serious injuries, and there were 0 fatalities.
