On July 15, 2025, at approximately 0005 PDT, SkyWest Airlines flight 3005, an Embra Or 170-200LR (registration N185SY), performed a pilot-initiated go-around while 4 miles from the threshold of runway 10R at Monterey Regional Airport (MRY). The flight had departed from San Diego International Airport (SAN) at approximately 2306 PDT.
At the time of the event, the airport was under a scheduled closure between 0000 and 0500 PDT, as indicated by a NOTAM. While the flight was on approach, airport operations personnel placed lighted runway closure markers (“X”) at both ends of runway 10R. The flight crew, while descending via the ILS, was notified via the common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) by the airport operations manager that the runway was closed. Following this notification, the crew executed a missed approach procedure.
During the missed approach, the crew coordinated with Northern California TRACON (NCT) to request another approach. The captain noted that the controller required positive verbal confirmation that the runway was open before providing further clearance. After ground personnel reported that the runway was open, the airport operations team temporarily removed the closure markers. The aircraft was vectored for a second approach and landed uneventfully at approximately 0025 PDT. There were no injuries among the 2 flight crewmembers, 2 cabin crewmembers, or 35 passengers.
Prior to the flight, the SkyWest dispatcher had noted the scheduled closure in the flight release but estimated the arrival would occur before the closure began. However, a 20-minute departure delay from San Diego pushed the arrival time into the period of the scheduled airport closure.
